for the LOVE of Turtles
Author: adminMy genuine fascination and love for turtles started after reading the Dr. Seuss classic “Yertle the Turtle” as a kid. Shortly after, I became a happy owner of a couple of tiny turtles in addition to all the other pets in our family. Neighborhood friends would visit me, and we would have turtle races in my room. There was always something very magical & fun about turtles. There is a lot of things I’ve learned from my tiny turtle pets. Turtles appear to never be overwhelmed about the world around them. When a task becomes an obstacle, it’s important to be as persistent and determined as a turtle. Sondra Faye #quote
even if you can not have turtles at home, it would be great if you are an educator to share this special creature that is an essential part of the delicate world ecological balance. An informative site for Researchers Data and so Teachers can bring the “Love of Turtles” into the classroom is
www.seaturtle.org
There is a section devoted to materials to help spread the word about Turtles with downloadable information for their students
As for the grown-up LOVE of turtles; in his article: “Florida Turtle Tunnel Protects Motorists Too” for the Huffington Post; Michael Markarian, executive vice president of The Humane Society of the United States,
( www.twitter.com/mmarkarian ) tells about the Lake Jackson Ecopassage, which will help turtles and other animals cross a busy and deadly stretch of U.S. Highway 27 in Tallahassee, Florida. With 13.4 million people supporting the Lake Jackson Ecopassage it looks like a permanent solution to this significant wildlife mortality is in process. The dedication of Dr. Matt Aresco, wildlife biologist, was featured in Joe Follick’s article, “Biologist sticks his neck out for endangered turtles” on Ocala.com. Dr. Aresco has been on turtle patrol on this one mile stretch of highway of U.S. 27. Dr. Aresco has kept an eye on the turtles crossing, and has collected scientific data for the past 10 years. In the past 3 years, he has counted close to 9,000 dead turtles. In Whitney Ray’s “Turtle Tunnel” Capitol News Service article, it’s noted that a grant of $3.4 million of stimulus money is scheduled for September, in order to complete the building of a tunnel under highway 27. If you’d like to find out more about Dr. Matt Aresco’s work and Volunteer work in support of this project go to www.lakejacksonturtles.org .
Turtle Time Inc. is on PBS (a short film ) and more information is listed about Sea Turtle Monitoring on Jim McLaughlin’s Blog on wgcu.org. One of my favorite turtle blogs is called “Two Turtle Trackers” about a couple, Steve and Julie Campbell that have a diary about Bonita Springs, Florida turtle tracking season.
(You can also find them on twitter @2TurtleTrackers http://www.twitter.com/2TurtleTrackers/)
I do hope I’ve sparked your interest in these creatures, and you can always feed my virtual pet turtles. positive thoughts, sondra faye
